For the past two years, Edelberg in partnership with Tempus Fugit have recognized the good works of people in the watch industry striving to make meaningful contributions for the sake of others.
In 2013 it was Fonderie 47 that was acknowledged for their work on the Inversion Principle and in 2014, it was Marc Alfieri with the Polio Watch.
This year, the Writing Wrongs Award will recognize the work of Luc Pettavino and his project – Only Watch.
Luc Pettavino was most likely not thinking about what Duchenne muscular dystrophy was before his son Paul was born. Like most fathers, he was focused on his career as the former CEO and founder of the Monaco Yacht Show and his young family. But fate clearly had other plans for Luc as his son Paul was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. And like any father, he was not willing to accept a very real “life sentence” for his son. So he rolled up his sleeves and co-founded the Monaco Association against Muscular Dystrophy (AMM), which he has focused on since 2001.
For the young boys who are victims of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a very stark and often shortened future faces them. A future life where they will likely spend their remaining years in a wheelchair, dependent upon their families and care givers to simply survive.
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (or DMD) is a genetic disorder that will present in young boys as young as 3. A young boy who simply appears clumsy and poorly coordinated might in fact be presenting the early symptoms of DMD.
Mr. Pettavino has been a relentless advocate in the fight against DMD, raising money and awareness for research. And in this effort, the idea of OnlyWatch was born. It’s a pretty straightforward concept – invite the most prestigious and dynamic watch brands in the world each take up the challenge to create a singularly unique one of a kind watch to be auctioned at the OnlyWatch event. The proceeds of the auction are then donated to continue the work of AMM.
This year’s auction already boasts some forty brands and promises to be the best ever.
They say that necessity is the mother of invention, but in this case it is safe to say that refusal to accept an unreasonable situation is the father of change. And that father is Luc Pettavino.
